Mixing reggae with alternative rock, The Dirty Heads have had an amazing track record leading back to 2015. The group of Marina high school friends have been bouncing from tour to tour ever since their early album Sound of Change blew up across the world. The vocal duo of Jared Watson and guitarist Dustin Bushnell combined with bassist Shawn Hagood and drummer Matt Ochoa make a truly nostalgic sound that brings you back to the early 2000’s, or pushes for change (pun intended). Based out of Huntington Beach, California, the group put out their first album in 2008, which really didn’t reach any higher than local charts. However, Sound of Change became one of their biggest studio albums, even to this day. They’ve been on a rise ever since, touring all over America and Europe. Songs on this album like My Sweet Summer and Sound of Change are truly inspirational, reflecting on the life they chose. After major tours following the release of every new album, they returned to more local SoCal shows that heavily inspired their next album, Dirty Heads, which told a big story revolving their history in Huntington Beach. That’s All I Need, both the song and the music video, illustrate the background and inspiration that has lead them to where they are now. Their latest album, SWIM TEAM, released in October of 2017 which featured some of the most heartfelt songs ever performed by the band, or by anyone ever. This album was written about their new found popularity and how they felt like in order to pursue this new popularity, they had to leave behind everything they ever new. Celebrate is the best example of this, the lyrics read “Every night feels like another weekend, keep pretending that it’s easy, sold my soul for a wrecking ball, a shot at the moon but I mostly fall.” It’s clear that despite truly incredible achievements thus far, they’ve considered sacrificing it all for one more careless night at home as a highschooler. On January 25th 2019, the group dropped their newest single Listen To Me, which has drawn excitement from many, including myself, about the album that awaits it.
